Why does your company
use rocks and gravel in your water features?
Rocks and gravel in a water feature provides a high surface
area for beneficial bacteria to thrive. Rocking a pond also protects the liner
from puncture and sunlight. Contrary to popular belief, gravel in the pond can
reduce pond maintenance by reducing the amount of sludge that accumulates on
the bottom.
Do you use potted
plants in your ponds?
Other than tropical or invasive plants like lotus we usually
remove the plants from their pots. The plants are placed directly into the
gravel. This helps clean the gravel and keeps the plants from becoming root
bound. Plants growing in gravel also help protect them from fish.
How deep do you
excavate your ponds?
We usually construct our ponds to a 2' depth. This depth is
deep enough for fish to over winter and usually does not require fencing.
How many fish can I
put in a water garden?
For our ponds we recommend about 1" of fish for every square
foot of pond surface.
What is the
difference between a koi pond and a landscape pond?
A koi pond is a water feature built to house, showcase, and
grow koi at high numbers. A landscape pond is a water feature that is built to
mimic nature. It combines waterfalls, rocks, plants, and fish to create a
natural landscape setting. Koi are a great addition to a landscape pond and
will thrive if fish numbers are kept at acceptable numbers.
What do you do with
the fish in the winter?
The fish can stay in the pond through out the winter. Their
metabolism slows down and they go into a suspended state.
What is the average
cost of a water feature?
We can construct a complete 8x11 pond including: biofilter, mechanical filter, plumbing,
rocks and gravel, waterfalls and lighting for around $8000.
Are water gardens
safe for children?
As with any body of water small children should not be left
unattended, however with a 2' depth , rocks and gravel a properly constructed
water feature can be relatively safe.
